Reports To: Supervisor Database Administration
Role: To manage the performance, integrity and security of a database in line with the
established corporate standards and policies
Key Performance Areas
• To support corporate database availability
• To establish database user needs and monitor database user access and security;
• To monitor database performance and manage parameters to provide fast query responses to front-end users;
• To install and test new versions of the Database Management Systems
• To maintain corporate data standards, including adherence to the established corporate data standards manual
• To document database changes, including data standards, procedures and definitions for the data
dictionary (metadata);
• To control access permissions and privileges;
• To develop, manage and test the backup and recovery plans
• To ensure that storage, archiving, back-up and recovery procedures are functioning correctly;
• To participate in the design and execution of the corporate database capacity
planning;
• To work closely with other IT stakeholders in resolving incidents affecting
corporate services availability.
• To communicate regularly with other IT stakeholders and operational staff to
ensure database integrity and security;
• To commission and install new applications and customizing existing applications in
order to make them fit for purpose.
• To participate in the design and implementation of the service availability and
continuity strategies
• To evaluate and recommend new database technologies

Academic Qualifications
Essential;
a) Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, software engineering, Statistics (computer
option)
Desirable
b) Professional Certifications that are relevant to Database administrators such as
Microsoft Certified Database Administrator, Oracle Certified Database
Administrator or equivalent will be an added advantage.
Experience and Knowledge
a) At least one year experience in a database administration role in a dynamic
organization with more than a hundred employees
b) Experience in database management systems preferably Oracle and SQL, design,
performance tuning, database security, database backup and recovery
Character
a) High Level of Integrity
b) A strong desire to learn and improve.
c) Ability to prioritize and organize tasks carefully and accurately.
d) Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
e) Innovativeness and high attention to detail
f) Quick learner which great listening skills
g) Ability to work independently and as part of a dynamic team.
