VOLUNTEER IN THE FIELD
This is a new initiative created to expand charity: water’s presence on the ground and improve the flow of project information to and from the field. The program offers qualified volunteers the opportunity to take an active role in helping charity: water monitor and report on existing charity: water projects. Current placements are available for 3 volunteers in Ethiopia, Liberia and Uganda.
This is an unpaid volunteer position. Volunteers are required to fund their entire experience. charity: water will provide travel insurance and a modest stipend for in-country transportation. We estimate you’ll need at least $5,000 to fund your participation in this program.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
You’ll conduct site visits to charity: water projects to assess project function, verify reporting information and take photos.
You’ll provide updates and feedback to the charity: water team through regular field reports.
You’ll coordinate and fund all program components and logistics leading up to and during deployment.
MUST HAVES:
21 years or older | At least 3 months experience living in a developing country | Ability to commit to a 6 week assignment in October 2013 or January 2014 | Commitment to fund all costs related to volunteer deployment and training | A laptop, camera, GPS unit and international phone plan | Availability to participate in a 2-day training at charity: water’s office in NYC | Some background/experience in international development, water and sanitation desirable
SKILLS:
You take initiative and can work independently.
When you land in-country you’re going to hit the ground running. You’re self- sufficient and will be able to execute your volunteer responsibilities with limited support from our team in New York.
You’re flexible and able to adapt to a challenging work environment.
You’re attune to the inherent challenges that exist in the regions where charity: water works, and you’re ready to tackle anything that comes your way. You’re capable of excelling in an environment that’s not always familiar, comfortable or easy.
You’re a problem solver.
Nothing stops you from getting where you need to go or doing the work you need to do. When problems arise, your instinct is to step up, get creative and find a solution.
You’re a great communicator.
You recognize the importance of clear and consistent communication when working as part of a team. You check-in regularly and are able to concisely and effectively convey your message.
You have experience working internationally and cross-culturally.
This isn’t your first time in the field. You have international experience under your belt and proven experience collaborating across cultures.
